Tai Chi for Beginners
Tai Chi Workout Plan: A Progressive 4-Week Beginner Schedule
This Tai Chi workout plan builds consistency over four weeks without requiring a long form. Practice three times per week and repeat movements before adding complexity.
Week 1: foundations
Three 10-minute sessions: posture and warm-up for three minutes, opening and closing for four minutes, and a quiet finish for three minutes.
Week 2: weight transfer
Keep the 10-minute structure and add supported side-to-side shifts. The seated option is a small pressure shift with both feet grounded.
Week 3: movement connection
Extend to 12 minutes. Add Cloud Hands and connect it to the opening. Work on smooth transitions rather than more repetitions.
Week 4: stepping or heel placement
Use 12 to 15 minutes. Add short supported steps, or alternate seated heel placements. Finish with the complete familiar sequence.
Rest and progression
Leave at least one easier day between sessions at first. Repeat a week when technique changes with fatigue. Increase duration before stance depth, speed, or balance difficulty.
How to judge effort
You should be able to breathe comfortably and maintain control. Tai Chi can complement aerobic and strength exercise but may not replace all recommended activity.
Safety
Stop for pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual breathlessness. Health conditions, recent injury or surgery, and balance problems may require individualized advice.
