Tai Chi and Sleep
Tai Chi for Sleep: A Gentle Evening Routine
Tai Chi can become a low-stimulation evening ritual, but it is not a guaranteed insomnia treatment. The useful ingredients may include a predictable routine, gentle movement, reduced screen exposure, and a gradual transition away from daytime effort.
A quiet eight-minute routine
- Two minutes of natural breathing and shoulder release
- Two minutes of slow opening and closing hands
- Two minutes of seated or standing Cloud Hands
- One minute of gentle side-to-side shifting
- One minute of stillness with an easy gaze
Timing and intensity
Practice early enough that changing clothes, bright lights, or vigorous movement do not wake you up again. Keep the stance comfortable and avoid turning bedtime practice into a workout challenge.
Tai Chi and other relaxation methods
Reading, gentle stretching, breathing practice, and established behavioral sleep treatments may all have roles. Persistent insomnia deserves professional assessment; Tai Chi should not delay effective care.
When not to practice
Stop if movement causes dizziness, pain, unusual breathlessness, or agitation. If standing feels unsafe at night, use a firm chair.
