Tai Chi and Stress
Tai Chi for Anxiety: A Grounded, Gentle Practice Guide
Tai Chi may feel grounding because it combines predictable movement, attention, and comfortable breathing. It is not a guaranteed anxiety treatment and should not replace therapy, medication, or urgent care when those are needed.
A short grounding routine
- Feel both feet or the support of a chair.
- Let the breath remain natural for one minute.
- Open and close the hands slowly.
- Shift gently side to side or remain seated.
- Repeat one familiar arm pattern for three minutes.
- Finish by noticing five things in the room.
Breathing without making anxiety worse
Do not force deep breaths or long holds. Over-breathing can cause light-headedness or tingling. Return to normal breathing whenever a technique feels uncomfortable.
Build sustainable practice
Use short predictable sessions and track whether practice feels regulating. More movement is not always better during high anxiety.
When additional help matters
Seek qualified mental-health support when anxiety is persistent, disabling, or worsening. Use emergency services when there is immediate danger.
