Chair Tai Chi
Basic Chair Tai Chi Movements and a Daily Routine for Beginners
Beginners can build a useful daily chair Tai Chi routine from six basic movements. Use a firm, non-rolling chair and keep both feet supported.
Six basic chair Tai Chi movements
- Opening: float the hands forward and lower them slowly.
- Open and close: move the hands apart and return them toward center.
- Cloud Hands: pass one hand across the body with a small trunk turn.
- Brush Knee pattern: brush one hand past the thigh as the other moves forward.
- Heel placement: slide one heel forward, return it, and change sides.
- Closing: gather the hands toward the abdomen and rest them on the thighs.
A seven-minute daily routine
Spend one minute settling your posture, one minute each on Opening, Open and Close, Cloud Hands, and heel placements, then use one minute to connect two movements and one minute to finish quietly.
How to progress
First make the sequence familiar. Then add repetitions or one minute of practice. Increase range only when the shoulders and trunk remain relaxed. Do not add forceful twisting or faster repetitions to make seated practice harder.
Daily does not mean mandatory
Short daily practice may suit some people, while others need rest days. Adjust for fatigue, symptoms, other activity, and professional advice. Stop for pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual breathlessness.
Use the longer 10-minute chair Tai Chi routine when these movements feel familiar.
